In effect since 1982, the annual international summer program in Turkish Language and Culture is an accredited program which offers courses at three basic levels of language instruction taught by university staff specialized in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. The program provides intensive instruction in Turkish to adult learners while offering them an opportunity to have first-hand experience with the Turkish culture.
- PROGRAM

Courses are offered at elementary, lower and upper intermediate and advanced levels with a minimum of 5 students. Class size is limited to approximately 10 students. Each level receives 160 hours of instruction during the program. Classes are held on weekdays 9am - 1pm. Students meet with their teaching assistants for one hour in the afternoons for free conversation.
Weekly Turkish / English lectures are given by scholars specialized in their fields on various aspects of the Turkish culture ranging from economics, history, literature, fine arts, architecture and others. Weekly Turkish film sessions are scheduled for Monday afternoons.
Participation in cultural events in the city and daily excursions to historic and/or recreational sites may be organized on demand and interest. The cost of these excursions is not included in the course fees.
- COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

TK S10 Intensive Elementary Turkish - 12 Credits
Designed to provide a working knowledge of Turkish with equal emphasis on listening and reading comprehension as well as speaking. Fundamentals of phonology and simple sentence structures taught through intensive drilling and controlled lexicon relevant to basic communicative needs of students. Introduction of basic reading and writing patterns.Instruction: 12 hours of grammar and 8 hours of reading, writing, speaking and lab activities, free conversation with assistants.
TK S20 Intensive Lower Intermediate Turkish - 12 Credits
Introduction of more complex aspects of Turkish sentence structure with extended vocabulary. Grammar points reinforced through intensive study of selected short stories, articles and other relevant reading material. Introduces writing exercises through short compositions to enhance basic writing skills.
Instruction: 8 hours of grammar, 3 hours of reading, 2 hours of writing, 3 hours of speaking, 4 hours of laboratory, free conversation with assistants.
Prerequisite: TK S10 or equivalent preparation.TK S21 Intensive Upper Intermediate Turkish - 12 Credits
Emphasizes the more complex aspects of Turkish sentence structure with extended vocabulary. Focuses on speaking as well as intensive study of selected short stories, articles and other relevant reading material. Provides more advanced writing through diverse writing activities.
Instruction: 6 hours of grammar, 5 hours of reading, 2 hours of writing, 4 hours of speaking, 3 hours of laboratory, free conversation with assistants.
Prerequisite: TK S20 or equivalent preparation.
TK S30 Intensive Advanced Reading Turkish - 12 CreditsDesigned to provide complete mastery of the complex aspects of Turkish sentence structure for those who have had previous exposure to them. Particular emphasis on improving reading skills for learners who possess speaking competence in Turkish. Provides advanced writing exercises on diverse topics. Focuses on stylistic variations used in spoken and written Turkish.
Instruction: 5 hours of grammar, 6 hours of reading, 3 hours of writing, 4 hours of speaking, 2 hours of laboratory, free conversation with assistants.
Prerequisite: TK S21 or equivalent preparation.
TK S31 Intensive Advanced Spoken Turkish - 12 CreditsAims at full mastery of spoken modern Turkish. Features of informal styles introduced or reviewed through extensive oral practice. Topics of interest relating to life in Turkey are emphasized in free conversation.
Instruction: 5 hours of grammar, 5 hours of reading, 3 hours of writing, 5 hours of speaking, 2 hours of laboratory, free conversation with assistants.
Prerequisite: TK S21 or equivalent preparation.
- COURSE CREDIT

12 transferable credits are given upon successful completion of the course. A final grade will be issued only to those who fulfill the requirements of the course which include full attendance and participation in all examinations.
