Student Rights and Responsibilities
The "Student Rights and Responsibilities" declaration has been prepared within the framework of laws and university regulations to ensure the academic, social, and cultural development of Boğaziçi University students, based on principles of equality and diversity, aiming to create a high-quality educational and research environment and to foster students who are socially aware and conscious of their rights and responsibilities.
The rights and responsibilities stated in this declaration cannot be exercised in ways that restrict or negate the rights and responsibilities of others.
Freedom of Expression:
Right: Students have the right to freely express their opinions and ideas, provided that they respect the rights of others and refrain from inciting violence or using insults.
Responsibility: Students shall respect the freedom of expression and rights of others.
Equality:
Right: Students shall not be discriminated against based on belief, religion, language, race, disability, gender, or sexual orientation. They are entitled to respectful and equal treatment by academic and administrative staff and fellow students. No student shall be subjected to humiliating behavior or attitudes.
Responsibility: Students shall respect differences without discrimination and refrain from humiliating behavior toward others. They shall treat academic and administrative staff and fellow students with respect.
Right to a Safe Environment:
Right: Students have the right to live in an environment free from all forms of violence and harassment (physical, emotional, sexual). In cases of sexual harassment and abuse of power, complaints are handled with confidentiality and seriousness (see Harassment Prevention and Protection Guide).
Responsibility: Students shall not inflict violence or harassment, either verbally or physically, upon any individual or group.
Privacy of Personal Information:
Right: Except as required by law or regulations, students’ academic and personal information cannot be shared with third parties or institutions without their consent.
Responsibility: Students shall not access others’ academic or personal information without permission, and if such information is accessed, they must notify and inform the relevant parties.
Sustainable Quality Campus Life:
Right: Students have the right to live in a healthy, clean, hygienic, and aesthetically mindful environment that supports academic, cultural, and social development.
Responsibility: Students shall care for their environment and animals, keep their surroundings clean, avoid noise and visual pollution, and use limited resources responsibly to maintain a quality living environment.
Education:
Right: Students are entitled to access optimal facilities such as classrooms, laboratories, libraries, sports and arts venues, and receive academic and administrative guidance and support. They shall be timely informed about course content and evaluations. Students with disabilities have the right to reasonable accommodations (e.g., seating arrangements, exam assistance). They may receive information about and appeal exam results and academic evaluations.
Responsibility:
Students shall attend courses and exams, submit assignments on time, monitor their academic progress, and adhere to academic calendars and regulations.
They shall abide by principles of academic integrity, avoiding plagiarism, cheating, and document falsification.
Specifically, students acknowledge that all academic work will be evaluated based on their own efforts, unauthorized copying, paraphrasing without citation, or submission of others’ work constitutes a disciplinary offense ((Higher Education Institutions Student Disciplinary Regulations)).
- Sources must be properly cited when using any published or unpublished material (e.g., articles, books, reports, other students’ work, internet references).
- Students shall not present work done by others as their own.
- Cheating during exams is prohibited.
- No alteration or falsification of documents, including electronic files, is allowed.
Participation:
Right: Students have the right to participate in academic, social, and extracurricular activities (such as clubs, Student Executive Committee, etc.) and benefit from services provided by units like BÜREM and Mediko-Sosyal. Every student may elect and be elected as a representative and participate in university governance through their representatives (see Student Executive Committee).
Responsibility:
- Students shall fulfill their assigned duties and comply with relevant rules and regulations.
- They shall attend appointments punctually and inform in advance if unable to attend meetings or consultations.
- Participation in Student Executive Committee elections is expected.
Seeking Rights, Being Informed, and Providing Information:
Right: Students may file petitions concerning academic matters to the relevant department or unit head, and other issues through the Student Affairs Deanery via the Correspondence Office, with the right to receive a timely response within legal time limits.
Students accused of any violation have the right to defend themselves and appeal.
Responsibility: Students are responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date personal information and for following up on related procedures.
