The Department of Educational Sciences conducts an undergraduate program leading to a B.A. degree in Guidance and Psychological Counseling and offers pedagogic formation courses to students in the Teacher Education Programs for the other departments of the Faculty of Education. There is one double-major program conducted by the Department with Preschool Education Department. The Department of Educational Sciences offers four graduate programs; M.A. degree in Guidance and Psychological Counseling, M.A. degree in Adult Education, M.A. degree in Curriculum and Instructional and Ph.D. degree in Educational Sciences. Institute of Social Sciences conducting graduate programs leading to an M.A. degree in Guidance and Psychological Counseling.

Educational goals and objectives

The goal is to train students who may fulfill guidance and basic psychological counseling functions with young people in educational or school settings. This training has a line of coursework, the liberal arts core foundation, shared by the University in the beginning years, and a line of elective coursework from within and outside of the department.

Admission and special requirements

ARTICLE 6 - (1) Admission of students to undergraduate programmes is made according to the principles determined by the Senate within the framework of the Higher Education Law No. 2547 and the regulations and decisions of the Council of Higher Education. (2) The application and admission procedures of students from abroad are made according to the principles determined by the Senate within the framework of the relevant legislation provisions. (3) Internal or external transfer application and admission procedures are made according to the principles determined by the Senate within the framework of the relevant legislation provisions.

Acknowledgement of previous learning

Course counting and exemption ARTICLE 14 - (1) The credits of the courses taken by the students in a higher education institution can be transferred and counted as a substitute for the obligations in the undergraduate programme in which they are enrolled with the decision of the relevant board of directors. (2) The following rules are applied in course counting: a) The transfer of courses with a grade of at least CC can be made by the relevant board of directors, provided that they have been taken before but not counted towards a diploma and the student has been dismissed from that institution. b) The maximum period for the completion of course counting is determined by the relevant regulations and directives, provided that it does not exceed the beginning of the registration period of the semester following the semester in which the student is placed in the undergraduate programme. c) The transfer of the courses taken in other higher education institutions by students participating in exchange programmes is made with the decision of the relevant board of directors until the end of the add-drop period of the semester following the semester in which they return from the exchange programme at the latest. ç) Courses taken at the University are transferred with grades and credits. d) Courses taken at another higher education institution are transferred with a grade of P and credits. In case the scope of the courses is the same with the programmes of the University but the credits are different, the courses that are decided to be equivalent by the relevant department, taking into account the theoretical, practical and laboratory hours, are given the credit of the course deemed equivalent with the approval of the relevant board of directors. (3) The principles of exemption from first year courses are determined by the Senate.

Graduation requirements

ARTICLE 31 - (1) In order for a student to graduate from the programme he/she is enrolled in and be eligible to receive a diploma; a) He/she must spend the last semester at the University, excluding the summer term. b) He/she must complete all credit and non-credit courses with a grade of at least DD or P. c) Provided that it is not less than half of the programme graduation credits, he/she must complete the credits at the rate determined by the department with the courses taken at the University. However, in special cases, the Board of Directors of the University is authorised to take a decision. ç) Complete the programme with a GPA of at least 2.00. (2) Within the maximum period; a) Students who have a GPA of at least 2.00 and cannot fulfil the graduation requirements because they have received a grade of F in only one course (credit or non-credit) may be given the opportunity to take an exam or do an academic study that will replace it without repeating these courses by the relevant board of directors, taking the opinion of the relevant instructor. These students are given a maximum grade of DD according to the level of the course. In case of failure, the course is repeated and other provisions of the Regulation are applied. b) Students who have completed all the credits of the relevant programme but whose GPA is below 2.00 may repeat the courses in which they have received DC and DD grades without applying the provisions of the third paragraph of Article 27 with the approval of the relevant advisor and the board of directors until they fulfil the graduation requirements. (3) The graduation decision of the student who has completed the graduation requirements cannot be postponed.
