The Kandilli Campus is a continuation of the Kandilli Observatory, which was originally established in 1868 and affiliated to Boğaziçi University in 1982. Following its affiliation to Boğaziçi University, it gained the identity of an earthquake research institute in addition to its previous functions and was renamed Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute.
