Elected Director Heads the 147-year Observatory for First Time in Its History
Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener has been assigned as the Director of Boğaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute.
Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener will be in charge of Boğaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, an important center for the studies on earthquake monitoring and reducing earthquake-related loss in Turkey. From 2010 until this year, Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener served as the Deputy Head of Boğaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute and the Head of Geodesy Department. Prof. Dr. Özener has recently been assigned to his new post after an election by the Institute's academic staff, for the first time in Boğaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute. Voted first among the candidates by the Institute's academic staff, Prof. Dr. Özener is appointed as the new Director by Prof. Dr. Gülay Barbarosoğlu, Rector at Boğaziçi University. Regarding the assignment, Prof. Dr. Barbarosoğlu, the Rector, said: "While shaping the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute's management, I preferred this assignment to be supported by an election in line with the democratic practices of Boğaziçi University." Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener assumed the post as of May 6, 2015 as the 11th Director of the Boğaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Erdik, who had been in charge of the institute since 2009, retired due to old age in May 2015.
About Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener
Haluk Özener graduated from Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Geodesy and Photogrammetry Engineering in 1988, and then completed his MS and PhD studies in Boğaziçi University, Geodesy Department in 1992 and 2000, respectively. Starting his academic career in 1989 as a Research Assistant in Boğaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, Özener became an Associate Professor in 2003, served as the Head of the Geodesy Department in the same Institute in 2005-2007, and worked in KOERI, Geodesy Department and Boğaziçi University, Department of Civil Engineering.
Continuing his academic life in Istanbul Technical University, Geomatics Engineering Department in 2007-2009, he was reassigned to Boğaziçi University as a full Professor in 2009.
During (1999) and after (2003) his PhD studies, Özener conducted research in Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences and Earth Resources Laboratory as a visiting researcher, and he served as the Deputy Head of Boğaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute and Head of the Geodesy Department since 2010.
Participating in more than 50 International and National academic research projects as a director, consultant and researcher so far, Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener published over 250 scientific publications indexed by SCI, SCI-Expanded, etc. He attended more than thirty International and National Scientific meetings as an organizer, moderator and scientific committee member.
Özener's primary research interests consist of Geodesy, Space Geodesy, GPS applications to earth science, Geodynamics, earthquake hazards, deformation of engineering structures, Geotechnical/Geodetic monitoring of tunnels, Geoinformation Systems/GIS Applications, Stochastic Modeling, Establishment of Geodetic Networks and project management.
Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener continues to serve as the Chairman of the Tectonic and Earthquake Geodesy Commission under the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), Chairman of the International WEGENER Working Group, President of the Earthquake Association, Chairman of the TMMOB-HKMO (Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects - Chamber of Topographical and Cadastral Engineers) Geodesy and Navigation Commission, Chairman of the Turkish National Geodesy Commission (TUJK) - Geodynamics Working Group. Moreover, he is a member of approximately twenty International and National Professional associations, assuming different posts. Prof. Dr. Özener is married with one child.-*-
