DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM

The Ph.D. program of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature is designed to prepare promising young scholars for academic careers in teaching and research in Turkish literature and related fields. Our program offers specialization in two different areas of research: Classical Turkish Literature or Modern Turkish Literature. The program encourages students to pursue interdisciplinary and comparative research. In addition to the seminar courses, we offer workshops, talks, and informal meetings, providing a welcoming environment of intellectual and scholarly culture for students.

Students eligible for the program must have previous undergraduate or graduate degrees in literature. In the first three semesters, Ph.D. students are required to complete minimum 25 credits of coursework. This is followed by a qualifying examination. Students are expected to work on their doctoral dissertations in the third and fourth years.

There are a total of seven elective courses in each area of specialization (premodern or modern Turkish literature). Students may take some of their courses from one of these areas of specialization. To be able to write a dissertation in one of the two specialization areas, a minimum of 16 credits must be completed from the specialization electives of that particular area of study.

With the consent of the advisor, a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 credits must be taken from other graduate programs in related departments such as History, Western Languages and Literatures, Philosophy, Linguistics, Sociology, Ataturk Institute for Modern Turkish History, or Translation and Interpreting Studies.
