DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM

The PhD program in learning sciences comprises a minimum of 29 credits of coursework, a non-credit graduate seminar in learning sciences, and a thesis. The coursework consists of 2 major required (LS 601 and LS 650), a directed readings course, and 7 elective courses. The program offers courses in four major categories: learning and cognition, methodology, design, and socio-cultural context. Students must complete five area elective courses in the specified categories as well as two additional free elective courses. Free elective courses may be chosen from among the courses offered by the program or by other programs in the university, subject to the approval of the advisor. Students with an MA, MEd, MPhil, or MSc degree can apply for the program.

Remedial Program

Candidates who have not taken at least one course from each of the following categories during their undergraduate or graduate studies are required to complete at least one course from each category before being officially admitted to the PhD.

Qualifying Exams

PhD students are required to take their qualifying exams by the end of registration week of the semester following completion of the coursework. If the students want, the qualifying exams may be postponed one semester.

Students are required to take at least one course from each category and one more course as an area elective, depending on the area of their interest.
