The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics was founded in 1977 as the first molecular biology department in the country and since then has expanded to include many areas of biology. Besides the undergraduate program, the department now offers graduate degrees at the masters and Ph.D. levels. All faculty are active in research and teaching and place great emphasis on student participation both in class and in research activities. The students gain a solid foundation in biology through lecture and laboratory courses and practical experience by taking part in research projects. The department's aim is to prepare students for a promising future in research, and as a result, a large percentage of graduates pursue graduate studies in the country and abroad.

In the first two undergraduate years, core courses (mathematics, physics, chemistry, introductory biology) provide a strong scientific background upon which to build. In the third and fourth years, students combine required courses in biochemistry, microbiology, cell biology, genetics and laboratory techniques with electives in specialized topics, such as developmental biology, plant genetics, human genetics and immunology. Double-major programs with the physics, mathematics and chemistry departments are available.

The Department is one of the leading Turkish centers of research in molecular biology and human genetics with a special emphasis on complex genetic disorders. Currently, research is conducted on the identification of novel disease genes and the genetic and molecular mechanisms involved in cancer, epilepsy, hemophilia, neurodegenerative disorders, peripheral neuropathies and thalassemia. Other ongoing major research topics include translation mechanisms, signal transduction, neurodevelopment, plant pathogen resistance, and innate immunity.

Educational goals and objectives

Molecular Biology and Genetics is a very diverse and constantly growing field describing not only the elementary structure of the molecules of life but also their interactions during cellular function, including development, physiological, and disease processes of an organism. A good understanding of these processes is the basis for understainding malfunction and disease, both of which are directly related to the wellbeing of an organism and, in addition, have a tremendous impact on society and social life. Hence, our graduates become scientists identifying, tackling and finding solutions to many questions arising in the field of Molecular Biology and Genetics.

Admission and special requirements

Admission of students to Molecular Biology and Genetics department is carried out in accordance with the principles determined by the Senate within the framework of Law No. 2547 on Higher Education, Higher Education Board regulations, and decisions.

Apllication and admission procedures for international students are conducted in accordance with the relevant legislation and principles determined by the Senate.

For detailed information about admissions, please see the Article 6 of Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Lisans Eğitim ve Öğretim Yönetmeliği.

Acknowledgement of previous learning

a) Following admission of a candidate, the relevant Executive Board determines the courses the candidate has taken previously that correspond to the courses in the program to which the candidate has been admitted.

b) The number of semesters the student can transfer is calculated by dividing the total credits the students has transferred by 17. The transferred semesters are included in the student's expected and maximum periods of study.

c)Courses that the student has completed with a grade of CC or above and whose transfer has been accepted by the relevant faculty or school, their credits, and grades earned, are recorded in the student's transcript.

For further information please see the Article 14 of

Regulations Governing Transfer to Undergraduate Programs of Boğaziçi University

Graduation requirements

In order for a student to graduate from the Molecular Biology and Genetics department,

a) Except for the summer term, they must spend their last semester enrolled at the University.

b) They must complete all courses taken for credit or non-credit with a minimum grade of DD or P (Total credit 1407142 - ECTS 240/242).

c) They must complete their program with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00.
