The Modern Languages Unit offers to students of all departments courses in many languages (Armenian, French, German, Greek, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish) and provides both practical training in written and spoken language. For some languages (French, German and Spanish), translation courses as well as introductory courses in Literature and Culture are also available.

Basic elements of the history of the Modern Greek language and literature, its relation to the Ancient Greek language (kathareuousa vs. demotiki), its main periods and representative authors as well as the Turkish vocabulary which has entered into Modern Greek, with expressions and conceptual constructions common in both Modern Greek and Turkish.

Introduction to basic aspects of the Italian grammar. Preparing students to deal competently with a wide range of day-to-day situations in spoken Italian and develop oral skills in simulated contexts. Communicative functions covered: making acquaintance; inviting, accepting and refusing an invitation; talking about leisure time; simple transactions at restaurant, hotel, bank, post-office; filling out a form. Introduction to general aspects of Italian culture like gestures and formal vs. informal contexts mainly through the use of pictures and simple audiovisual texts such as role-play activities for beginners. ITA 102 Elementary Italian II (2+2+2) 3 ECTS 7

Focus on selected aspects of the Italian grammar. Emphasis on listening and reading comprehension. Consolidating and improving students’ previous knowledge of key basic vocabulary. Communicative functions covered: talking about daily life activities, timetables and habits; asking and giving street directions; talking about past life events and holidays; talking about the weather.  Focus on aspects of the Italian culture like food and sport through the use of situational videos, short video interviews and role-play activities.
